Waterfront Market

16 May

We went for our Sunday walk today and went down to the waterfront at Ipswich, a beautiful day in the sun, fairly warm out of the wind. Today also saw a Market along the water edge, making the area even more busy than normal!

There was a number of stalls, most of which were selling crafts.

Repaired the Sky+ Box!

14 May

On Tuesday night whilst watching telly the Sky+ box just shut down without any warning. After a couple of minutes I was able to switch it back on but none of the Sky+ functions were working, just an error message saying there is a fault please contact sky.

I knew what the problem was; the hard drive had finally given up! the signs were there for some time. Occasionally when watching a recorded programme it would suddenly start breaking up.

Anyway, the next day I got myself a new much larger hard drive, 400Gb instead of the 40GB orginal drive and fitted it. I was surprised how easy it was, just followed some guide from the internet and I was up and running again in a hour.

Now instead of 40hours storage I now get a massive 350 hours or so! Happy recording

Up on the Roof

09 May

Last night Katrina and I went to the New Wolsey Theatre with some friends to see Up on the Roof. This is a very good musical comedy.

Up on the Roof

For anyone who has ever dreamed…Up On The Roof is a poignant and affectionate musical comedy which celebrates the enduring power of friendship.

A New Wolsey Theatre/Oldham Coliseum co-production
in association with
Anvil Arts
By Simon Moore and Jane Prowse. Directed by Peter Rowe

It is 1975 and five students at Hull University are up on the roof of their student digs for the last meeting of ‘The Roof Club’ – their a capella singing group who perform doo-wop covers. In between the songs they reveal their hopes, dreams and aspirations for the lives they are about to embark upon. The next ten years sees how their individual journeys, successes and failures, are reflected in the changing relationships within this tight knit group of friends.

Whatever the tensions within the group, they disappear whenever they sing – and they always sing, any time, any place, anywhere, from Bohemian Rhapsody, What Becomes of the Broken Hearted, Never Can Say Goodbye, I’m Not In Love and My Eyes Adored You to When Will I See You Again and of course their signature tune Up On the Roof.

A very good night out!

Vergo go into Administration

08 May

Katrina received the news that no employee ever wants to hear, the company you work for has gone into administration.

MCR appointed administrators for Vergo Retail Limited
May 7 2010
Sarah Bell and Steven Muncaster, Partners at MCR, have been appointed joint administrators of department store business Vergo Retail Limited (“the Company”) on Friday, 7 May 2010.

The Company was established in 2007 and operates from a head office in Liverpool, employing a total of 942 staff across 19 outlets. These include nine significant department stores such as Lewis”s of Liverpool, Robbs of Hexham, Joplings of Sunderland and Derrys of Plymouth.

Sarah Bell, Partner of MCR, stated: “Unfortunately the Company has endured periods of financial loss. It has made efforts following the recently announced closure of the Lewis’s store in Liverpool, to seek new finance to restructure the business but has been unsuccessful in finding a going concern solution. Like many retailers, it has experienced a difficult trading environment during the economic downturn.”

The administrators have confirmed that at this stage the Company is trading as normal, while the position of the Company is reviewed and a buyer is sought to purchase the business as a going concern.

Vergo Retail Limited acquired the department stores of Lewis”s, Robbs and Joplings in May 2007. Interested parties should contact MCR as soon as possible on 0161 827 9000.

Currently the business is open as normal, but for how long? Will they be brought out? only time will tell.

Apple reveals UK iPad prices

Apple has revealed that the iPad, which will go on sale in the UK on 28 May, will cost £429 for the basic version. Prices go all the way up to £699 for the top of the range 64GB device with both Wi-Fi and 3G network access.

The Californian technology company, which has already seen sales of the iPad sail past the 1m mark after just a month in the shops, will open its website for pre-orders of the device to British gadget fans from Monday next week. Alongside the UK, the tablet computer will also be available on 28 May in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain and Switzerland.

Apple pushed back the international launch of the device last month, citing “surprisingly strong US demand”. More than 500,000 were delivered to American retailers and customers in its first week on sale.

In the US, Apple has already sold more than 1m iPads and customers have downloaded more than 12m apps from the App Store, as well as more than 1.5m ebooks from the new iBookstore, Apple added.

In the past, Apple has come in for criticism for the difference between the prices of its products in Europe compared with the US. In the US the basic iPad costs $499, which at the current pound-dollar exchange rate is £338. Apple points out that there are different, and higher, taxes in Europe – the prices it is quoting include VAT – as well as increased transport and other costs.

Apple’s price for the 16GB version of the Wi-Fi only iPad is £429 (including VAT) while the 32GB version is £499 and 64GB is £599. For the Wi-Fi and 3G version of the iPad, the 16GB device will be £529 (including VAT), the 32GB device £599 and the largest 64GB Wi-Fi and 3G iPad will be £699.

The corresponding US prices are $499/$599/$699 and $629/$729/$829. There are also numerous peripherals to push up the price: case ($39), keyboard dock ($69), iPad dock ($29), camera connection kit ($29), USB power adapter ($29), VGA adaptor ($29), wireless keyboard ($69), Mobile Me ($69) and AppleCare ($99).

O2, Orange and Vodafone will all be offering mobile data plans for UK consumers who buy the 3G-enabled iPad, but details have yet to be released.

Apple plans to release iPad in Austria, Belgium, Hong Kong, Ireland, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand and Singapore in July and will announce availability, local pricing and pre-order plans for these nine additional countries at a later date.

Apple iPad sales hit 1 million

04 May

Today apple reported that it has sold 1 million iPads in only a month, very impressive, considering they are only on sale in the US!

Just four weeks after release Apple has announced it has sold one million iPads.

Helped by a massive amount of hype ahead of launch day on 3 April this latest set of figures mean it’s selling faster than the iPhone did when it was released.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “One million iPads in 28 days – that’s less than half the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with the iPhone”.

Users have also downloaded around 12 million applications, or apps, to use on the device as well as 1.5 million digital books to read on its 9.7 inch colour touchscreen.
