As you may already know I have been practising the art of David Allen’s Getting Things Done work flow methodology for a few years now. But it is only recently that I have realised that I have finally mastered it! Yes, Its taken three years but boy when you get it you get it and it feels good.

So what has brought it all together?

The large majority of ‘my stuff’ is electronic, so for that i use ‘OmniFocus’ for both the Mac, iPhone and my iPad. unfortunately they have no web or PC versions but with the iPhone and the ability to email actions into my system I haven’t found this to be an issue. Since iOS 5 has been launched you can now have OmniFocus reminder you a available actions based on your location. This feature I have found to be a lifesaver. Any paper stuff enters my inbox and gets processed and entered into my OmniFocus system.

For reference material i have found ‘Evernote’ to be by the best, with apps for all platforms and the ability to sync eve through my company’s tough firewall, I have found this to just work. The search feature is incredible, with the ability to search not just the text within the note but also embedded pdf’s, office documents and pictures, very quickly too!

The weekly review, this I have only just started to do regularly and now that I do i have noticed how important it is, if I miss a review I soon notice an amount of unease, once completed I know that everything is in hand. I can even choose to defer actions if I wish. So during the week I need to only look at the appropriate context.

Having a trusted system, one that I have now experienced to work very well, makes me realise that over the past couple of years I was just playing at GTD now it’s working for me.

I have been praticing GTD now for a couple of years. So what is GTD?

GTD® is the shorthand brand for “Getting Things Done®“, the groundbreaking work-life management system by David Allen that provides concrete solutions for transforming overwhelm and uncertainty into an integrated system of stress free productivity.

GTD is a powerful method to manage commitments, information, and communication. It is the result of thirty years of consulting services, private coaching, training, and organizational programs with millions of people internationally. It has earned a reputation as the gold standard in personal and organizational productivity.

GTD enables greater performance, capacity and innovation. It alleviates the feeling of overwhelm, instilling focus, clarity and confidence.

Step by step you will learn how to:

Capture anything and everything that has your attention and concern

Define actionable things into concrete next steps and successful outcomes

Organize information in the most streamlined way, in appropriate categories, based on how and when you need to access it

Keep current and “ahead of the game” with appropriately frequent reviews

Keep track of the bigger picture while managing the small details

Make trusted choices about what to do in any given moment

Decades of in the field research and practice of GTD led to the publishing of the international bestseller “Getting Things Done”. Published in over 28 languages, TIME magazine heralded it as the defining self-help business book of its time.

Well as 2012 fast approaches and we review the last year, our thoughts turn to the next year and how we can improve.

For some of us, it will be to diet or stop smoking maybe. Whilst for me, I’d like to do a weekly review, weekly! I have been an interested student of Getting Things Done (GTD) by David Allen for some time, but, one of the hardest things I’ve found has been the weekly review.

Today I spent 5 hours doing my first real weekly review, hopefully future reviews will be a lot quicker! The past 12 days have also been spent on “my system” and that’s for another post.
