Hot weather prompts Met Office heatwave health alert

09 Jul

The first weather health alert of the summer has been issued as temperatures are set to soar in parts of the UK.

Peaks of 31C (87.8F) across East Anglia and south-east England are expected on Friday and Saturday.

The Met Office said the main risk to health would come from stifling night-time temperatures of at least 20C (68F) in some places.

“It is the night-time values which are of real concern,” said head of health forecasting Wayne Elliott.

“High humidity and the lack of any breeze could make matters worse for people with underlying health problems.”

‘Feel uncomfortable’

The Met Office’s heat warning is set at level two out of four on its scale of how likely temperatures are to cause health problems.

Those at most risk from the hot weather are the elderly and babies and young children.

To keep cool, the NHS advises wearing loose cotton clothes, spraying or splashing faces and the backs of necks with cold water several times a day and staying in the coolest rooms of the house as much as possible.

Windows should be kept closed when the room is cooler than it is outside.

BBC weather forecaster Carol Kirkwood said: “We’re not just talking about the temperatures by day, we’re also talking about the minimum temperatures because for some of us they’re not going to dip lower than 18C – and that will feel uncomfortable.”

Hosepipe ban

Temperatures will be more bearable in north-west England, west Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, reaching the high teens and low 20s centigrade over the weekend.

The highest temperature of the year so far was 30.9C (87.6F) at Gravesend in Kent on 27 June.

Pet charity the Blue Cross has issued advice for owners about keeping their animals safe in the hot weather, warning that they can suffer fatal heatstroke within minutes.

The organisation said pets should never be left alone in a car, even with the windows open, and exercising during the heat of the day should be avoided.

Meanwhile, a hosepipe ban started at 0600 BST on Friday affecting millions of householders in parts of Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside.

Water company United Utilities said the region had had the driest start to a year since records began in 1929.

ITV HD viewers miss England’s first World Cup goal

13 Jun

ITV has apologised to its HD channel viewers after a “transmission problem” caused them to miss England’s first World Cup goal.

Viewers did not see Steven Gerrard’s early strike against the USA in the 1-1 match. Some reported seeing an advert.

ITV said coverage had encountered an “interruption” and presenter Adrian Chiles apologised on air at half-time.

Last year, ITV viewers missed the winning goal in a Liverpool-Everton FA Cup tie when coverage cut to an advert.

ITV1 unaffected

One viewer writing in the ITV.com forum said: “I’m watching the game on Freesat HD and ITV cut to adverts just before England scored the first goal.”

Another wrote: “That was a disgrace, I miss the first England goal of the World Cup as ITV cut us to an advert break on ITV1 HD!!!”

Those watching ITV1 were unaffected by the error. The match was seen by an average audience of 13.2m, which equated to 56% of the total number of people watching television at that time.

An ITV spokeswoman said: “A transmission problem temporarily affected ITV1′s HD service during the England/USA match.

“ITV standard definition service continued uninterrupted. We apologise for the interruption in transmission.”

Last year’s FA Cup glitch led to 1,000 complaints.

ITV boss at that time, Michael Grade, described it as “inexcusable”.

Repaired the Sky+ Box!

14 May

On Tuesday night whilst watching telly the Sky+ box just shut down without any warning. After a couple of minutes I was able to switch it back on but none of the Sky+ functions were working, just an error message saying there is a fault please contact sky.

I knew what the problem was; the hard drive had finally given up! the signs were there for some time. Occasionally when watching a recorded programme it would suddenly start breaking up.

Anyway, the next day I got myself a new much larger hard drive, 400Gb instead of the 40GB orginal drive and fitted it. I was surprised how easy it was, just followed some guide from the internet and I was up and running again in a hour.

Now instead of 40hours storage I now get a massive 350 hours or so! Happy recording

Vergo go into Administration

08 May

Katrina received the news that no employee ever wants to hear, the company you work for has gone into administration.

MCR appointed administrators for Vergo Retail Limited
May 7 2010
Sarah Bell and Steven Muncaster, Partners at MCR, have been appointed joint administrators of department store business Vergo Retail Limited (“the Company”) on Friday, 7 May 2010.

The Company was established in 2007 and operates from a head office in Liverpool, employing a total of 942 staff across 19 outlets. These include nine significant department stores such as Lewis”s of Liverpool, Robbs of Hexham, Joplings of Sunderland and Derrys of Plymouth.

Sarah Bell, Partner of MCR, stated: “Unfortunately the Company has endured periods of financial loss. It has made efforts following the recently announced closure of the Lewis’s store in Liverpool, to seek new finance to restructure the business but has been unsuccessful in finding a going concern solution. Like many retailers, it has experienced a difficult trading environment during the economic downturn.”

The administrators have confirmed that at this stage the Company is trading as normal, while the position of the Company is reviewed and a buyer is sought to purchase the business as a going concern.

Vergo Retail Limited acquired the department stores of Lewis”s, Robbs and Joplings in May 2007. Interested parties should contact MCR as soon as possible on 0161 827 9000.

Currently the business is open as normal, but for how long? Will they be brought out? only time will tell.

This year I will be voting, the first time for at least 10 years although even as I sit here writing this post i’m still not 100% sure on how to vote for. Can we actually trust any of them? All I know is I feel we do need a change.

Well tomorrow we’ll know!
